Korean artists in France: Why they went there and what they did there
Cette conférence sera consacrée à un aperçu de l’histoire des artistes coréens en France à partir des années 1920. Les objectifs de ces artistes, leur art, leurs interactions avec la scène artistique française et leurs personnalités étaient très différents les uns des autres. Cependant, depuis les premières arrivées dans les années 1920 jusqu’aux vagues d’étudiants des écoles des beaux-arts en France dans les dernières décennies, ces artistes ont suivi des modèles et des tendances qui constituent un bon argument pour l’établissement d’une périodisation et une étude des échanges artistiques transculturels.
Maël Bellec est le conservateur en charge des collections chinoises et coréennes au musée Cernuschi, le musée des arts asiatiques de la ville de Paris. Il a été commissaire de plusieurs expositions sur l’art moderne et contemporain, notamment « Séoul-Paris-Séoul : artistes coréens en France » en 2015, « Lee Ungno : l’homme des foules » en 2017, toutes deux organisées au musée Cernuschi, et « Lee Ungno : un étranger à la maison » au musée Lee Ungno de Taejŏn en 2018.

Korean artists in France: Why they went there and what they did there by Maël Bellec
This lecture will be dedicated to an overview of the History of Korean artists in France from the 1920s onwards. The aims of these artists, their art, their interactions with the French art scene and their personalities differed greatly one from another. But, from the first few arrivals in the twenties to the waves of students attending fine arts schools in France in the last decades, these artists followed patterns and trends which make a good case for the establishing of a periodization and a study of transcultural artistic exchanges.
Maël Bellec is the curator in charge of Chinese and Korean collections at the Cernuschi museum, the museum of Asian arts of the city of Paris. He curated several shows on modern and contemporary art, including « Seoul-Paris-Seoul: Korean artists in France » in 2015, « Lee Ungno: man of the crowds » in 2017, both in the Cernuschi museum, and « Lee Ungno: a stranger at home » in the Lee Ungno museum in Daejeon in 2018.
